Learn several simple improvisational techniques that can be used individually or can be combined into one piece. Timna will give you a basic structure to work from and then you take it from there to make your own unique piece. Beginner friendly.

I think of these blocks as little landscapes. Each block is a snapshot, but when you put them together, they create a larger scene. When deciding on fabrics, have a scene in mind – rolling hills, beach, winter prairie, summer fields, or a place from your imagination – and then choose colors that represent that idea. Bring your sense of play and a willingness to experiment.

  • Level: Confident Beginner, Intermediate
  • Ages: Adults
  • Instructor: Timna Tarr
  • Class Date: Saturday, August 15, 12-4 pm
  • Location: 330 High St., Holyoke, MA

Tools You Need to Bring:

  • Basic sewing supplies (scissors, seam ripper, pins etc.)
  • Sewing machine – straight stitch machines are fine
  • Rotary cutter, mat, and a couple of your favorite acrylic rulers.
  • Neutral colored thread
  • Iron and ironing pad (optional)

Note: If a student does not have the tools listed above, Paper City Fabrics has a select number of studio machines and sewing kits available to reserve on a first come, first served basis.

    Materials You Need to Bring:

    • Choose a color family that represents your scene. For the rolling hills
scene, I chose green and for the beach scene I chose tan. Bring at least
one light, medium, and dark fabric in the color family. 1⁄4 yard or fat quarter
      of each.
    • Assorted scraps to mix in with your main color palette. Be sure to include
some contrasting colors. 5” charm squares are a good size to bring.
    • 1⁄4 yard fabric for sashing
