Modern Selvage Quilt Design Workshop (Saturday, November 8, 12-3 pm)

Learn how to transform selvages into a modern quilt design using Amy Friend's Bibliography Quilt Pattern. (Pattern fee included in cost of class.) You might recognize this quilt from QuiltCon 2025 where it hung in the Modern Traditional category. Using selvages is a great way to ensure that not a single scrap goes to waste, but it also highlights those fun contemporary selvages, and provides so much design potential.  In this class you will learn how to best cut and collect selvages, work with selvages on a paper foundation (including fussy cutting), and apply foundation paper piecing techniques to create this large scale block design.  The quilt pattern comes in 3 sizes so you can make a quilt as large as your selvage collection!

About the Instructor
Amy Friend is a former museum curator turned designer. She designs modern quilts and specializes in paper pieced designs. She authored the books Intentional Piecing (2016), Improv Paper Piecing: A Modern Approach to Quilt Design (2017), and Petal + Stem (2020). She is an award winning quilter and her quilts have been exhibited at a number of quilt shows as well as museums. Amy is a national quilt teacher and lecturer. Amy lives in Massachusetts with her husband and three children.

• 90/14 Sewing Machine Needle (Superior Titanium Coated Topstitch Needle recommended)
• White or Off-White Thread for project (Aurifil Cotton 50wt recommended)
• Pins (Clover Flower Head pins recommend)
• Seam Ripper
• Fabric Scissors
• Paper Scissors
• Rotary Cutter
• Cutting Mat
• Iron

Optional: Lightboxes are helpful but optional. I will provide 4 to be shared by the class.

Fabric Requirements and Pre Cutting Instructions:

• 2 yards solid fabric (for the 48” x 48” size quilt): This fabric will be used for the background of your quilt. I highly recommend a solid rather than a textured solid or a print.
  
• Selvages: Bring a wide assortment of selvages. Selvages must measure at least 4” long and some should measure at least 12” long. Do not precut selvages into these lengths. Selvages should include at least 1⁄2”of the fabric beyond the selvage, up to an inch is optimal.

Precut your background fabric as follows: Cut 4 each of the following (this will be plenty for class with room for error).

• 3” x 13”
• 4 1⁄2” x 11”
• 4 1⁄2” x 13 1⁄2”
